GM To Hire 2,500 Workers
General Motors Co. announced Wednesday it will invest about $69 million into one of its Detroit plants, hiring 2,500 new employees to make two new sedans at the plant. Nestled between Detroit and Hamtramck, the factory currently puts out Chevy Volts and its European-sold counterpart, the Opel Ampera. GM will make a series of upgrades to the factory so that it can begin making a new-and-improved Chevy Impala and the new Malibu.
GM says that about 1,300 of the new jobs will be recalls of laid-off employees, while 1,200 will be new hires. The new jobs are big news in Michigan, which has one of the highest rates of unemployment in the nation. The company didn't say when the new hires or recalled workers would be brought in, but said that the new hires will be paid about $14 an hour, or about half of what veterans of the United Auto Workers Union typically earn.
The new jobs are part of a larger GM expansion in which it will invest about $2 billion and create or preserve 4,000 jobs at 17 plants across the U.S. The car maker has already announced a number of new jobs at its factories in Flint, Michigan; Bay City; Michigan, Toledo, Ohio; and Bowling Green, Kentucky.
