G. Dep Confesses to 1993 Harlem Murder
Rapper G. Dep has reportedly confessed to the 1993 murder of John Henkel, bringing new light into a case which has been cold for years. The rapper reportedly walked into a Manhattan police precinct to confess the murder, and was taken into custody after police matched G. Dep's story with the details of the murder. He is being held without bail after being indicted Tuesday on a charge that won't be disclosed until a January court date.
The 36 year-old rapper has been mired in legal and drug problems since scoring a couple of hits in the early 2000s, although he was attempting to make a comeback with an album released online this year. A lawyer representing him says the confession represents his desire to turn his life around, and is related to the rapper's “making ammends” as part of a treatment program.
John Henkel was shot in the chest three times outside of a Harlem apartment complex on October 19th, 1993, well before G. Dep made his way onto the hip-hop radar. The rapper told police that he had tried to rob Henkel with a .40 caliber handgun and shot the man when he resisted.
G. Dep spoke to the New York Post about the case, saying the shooting had been bothering him for years. "I started to wonder if all the bad things that happened to me in my life were karma for what I did. ... You start to think, 'My happiness is because of someone else's sadness,'" he told the newspaper. "I thought that if I turned myself in, it might give me closure."
