General Supports Legal Marijuana
A former US Surgeon General, Joycelyn Elders, according to a report from CNN, supports the legalization of marijuana.
California, a state known for setting trends that other states tend to follow, is putting the issue before voters next month in Proposition 19, a ballot initiative that will decide whether to legalize the recreational use of weed. Federal officials, however, have said that they would continue to enforce drug laws in the state even if the initiative passes.
"What I think is horrible about all of this, is that we criminalize young people. And we use so many of our excellent resources... for things that aren't really causing any problems," Elders told CNN. "It's not a toxic substance."
Prop 19 supporters argue that legalizing marijuana would raise revenue for the state while reducing costs related to the prosecution of those arrested for possession of the drug, while its opponents continue to claim that the drug has very harmful side-effects.
Elders claimed that marijuana is not physically addictive like more dangerous hard drugs, and does far less damage to the body than drinking alcohol, which is legal in all 50 states.
"We have the highest number of people in the world being criminalized, many for non-violent crimes related to marijuana," Elders told CNN. "We can use our resources so much better."
