Forbes Magazine's List of Billionaires Reaches Record
Number
Forbes Magazine released its annual list of the world's billionaires Thursday, and Mexico-based Carlos Slim Helu remained at the top as the world's richest man. With estimated assets of $74 billion, Helu easily stayed ahead of the world's second-richest man, Microsoft founder and CEO Bill Gates, who has an estimated wealth of $55 billion. Berkshire-Hathaway CEO Warren Buffet once again came in third on the list with assets totaling $50 billion.
The 2011 list breaks several records, including the number of billionaires, 1,210, surpassing 2008's total of 1,125; and total wealth represented by those on the list, at $4.5 trillion. This lofty figure is more than the gross domestic product of Germany, which was one of just six nations to have fewer names on the list this year. 108 of the names new to the list this year came from Brazil, China, India, and Russia.
2011 is also the first year in which any nation besides the US has more than 100 members on the list, as China now has 115 and Russia 101. Moscow has also replaced New York on the list as the city with the most billionaires with 79, compared to 58 in New York. Take a look at the list's top ten below.
