Facebook To Revamp Messaging System

Facebook To Revamp Messaging System
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Monday that the social networking giant is revamping its on-site messaging system to allow users to communicate faster and more seamlessly with their friends. Improvements will reportedly include integration across multiple communications channels, a “social inbox” for filtering messages, and a single conversation history.
Zuckerberg says that the new system is not designed to replace email, but rather a messaging system with a number of email-type features. The site will roll out the new features gradually over the next several weeks. Zuckerberg reported that Facebook currently handles about 4 billion messages per day.
The changes, Zuckerberg said, were in response to chats Facebook execs had with high school students, who reported rarely using email because it's too slow and formal. Multiple reports recently had Facebook unveiling a new Web-based email service at an upcoming event at its San Francisco, California-based headquarters. The system would be in direct competition with Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, and Google's Gmail, the top three web-based email services.
Facebook already allows users to hold private conversations between the site's 500 million users, but the new service will reportedly allow Facebook users to talk to contacts not on Facebook. Facebook and Google have been battling recently over the networking site's strict policies on exporting data to other sites.
