Facebook Passes Yahoo In Referrals
According to a report from BrightCove and Tube Mogul's Online Video & The Media Industry, Facebook passed Yahoo during last year's third quarter as the number two source of traffic to online videos on Internet media sites. The study measures referrals to videos all over the BrightCove network. Facebook stayed in second behind Google in the fourth quarter, the report says.
The report also showed the social network enjoyed the healthiest growth rate in terms of referral traffic, and now accounts for almost 12 percent of all referred video traffic to media sites. The report indicated that Facebook's growth was driven by its increasing support for white-listed embedded video that play's in-stream, allowing users to watch videos without being redirected to another site. Proving that search is key in referrals, Google accounts for 60 percent of referred traffic, while the popular Twitter website accounts for just 2 percent.
In terms of growth rate, Facebook is growing the fastest followed by Bing and Google, while both Yahoo and Twitter are showing diminishing growth. However, Twitter and Facebook have shown higher engagement rates than Google, meaning that referred users viewed videos longer.
