Facebook Goes Down for Second Consecutive Day

Facebook users were denied access to the world's largest social networking site for a second consecutive day on Thursday, when technical difficulties shut the website down early in the afternoon. The issues had been resolved and the site was up-and-running again by 5:30 PM ET. Wednesday, an unrelated issue with a third party network provider shut the site down, or severely slowed it, for several hours. The nature of Thursday's problems have not been revealed.

Facebook, with some 500 million-plus users, has become the undisputed king of social networking websites. As with Wednesday's Facebook outage, the issues on Thursday led thousands of social networkers to Twitter.com, to discuss the Facebook issues. A handful of Facebook users turned to Twitter to complain about their under-nourished plants and animals on Facebook's FarmVille application. And others joked that US worker productivity had risen drastically, alluding to a report last week that declared Facebook as the nation's biggest online time waster.

Meanwhile, in other Facebook news, the site's founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced plans to donate $100 million to the Newark, New Jersey school district. Forbes magazine says Zuckerberg is the 35th wealthiest American, with an estimated net worth of $7 billion, and, at 26, is the nation's youngest billionaire. The news comes just before the release of “The Social Network”, a fictionalized biopic about the early days of Facebook, which reportedly paints Zuckerberg in a decidedly unfavorable light. The timing of the CEO's announcement has caused many critics to call the donation an attempt to boost Zuckerberg's image.
