EPA Issues Chromium 6 Testing Guidance

The US Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday issued guidance for local authorities on how to test water supplies for the presence of hexavalent chromium, also known as chromium 6.  The agency is making the recommendations after it was discovered that the metal could be dangerous to people's health if consumed over long periods of time.

Though it has not been discovered that any US public water supplies are in violation of current standards, the science behind the substance and the health hazards it poses is evolving, according to the agency.

When the EPA completes its human health assessment on chromium 6 later this year, it will review the findings and determine if stricter standards need to be put in place.
