eBay Mobile Sales Up 166 Percent

eBay reported on Wednesday that its mobile sales have enjoyed robust growth over the holiday season, reporting a 166 percent rise in gross merchandise value (GMV) to $230 million between November 25th to December 25th as compared with the same period in 2009.

In the US, sales from the online auction site's mobile apps increased 134 percent from the same period last year, accounting for almost $100 million in GMV. The report ranked designer handbags, diamond jewelry, and Rolex watches as some of 2010's most expensive holiday purchases. The top five categories sold through eBay mobile apps in 2010, in terms of number of items sold, were: clothing & accessories, cell phones & PDAs, collectibles, jewelry & watches, and toys & hobbies.

In the US, the consumer electronics category saw its peak in eBay mobile sales following the release of the iPad and iPhone 4. Cars & trucks ranked in the top five categories in every state except for Hawaii, while auto parts ranked in the top five of every state. eBay made a significant push in 2010's second half to launch and heavily promote its new mobile apps in time for the holiday season. And as more and more Americans use mobile devices to shop on the Web, eBay is gaining traffic with its apps.

The company's primary iPhone app has been downloaded 13 million times, while its suite of apps have been downloaded more than 30 million times.
