Ebay Acquires Critical Path
The online auction website eBay announced on Wednesday it had acquired Critical Path Software, a developer of mobile software applications, in a move to further embrace the business of selling products to users of mobile devices. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Portland, Oregon-based Critical Path has worked with eBay for more than two years, and was responsible for developing the eBay app for Apple's iPhone, which eBay says has been downloaded more than 14 million times. Critical Path also developed apps for eBay's ticket site StubHub, eBay Classified, and Shopping.com.
Ebay has become increasingly focused on the area of mobile commerce, in response to the growing popularity of Web use on the devices. The total value of goods sold on eBay via mobile devices was more than $600 million in 2009, and is expected to top $1.5 billion in 2010. Ebay owns PayPal, an Internet payment system, which also allows users to pay using mobile devices. PayPal is expected to handle more than $500 million worth of mobile payments worldwide this year.
