EA Acquires Publisher
of “Angry Birds” Game
Electronic Arts announced on Wednesday that it has purchased Chillingo, the software company that publishes the popular smartphone game app, “Angry Birds.” Though terms of the deal were not revealed, Thomson estimated the value at $20 million.
"By acquiring Chillingo, EA Mobile is increasing its market leadership on the Apple platform as well as reaffirming its position as the world's leading wireless entertainment publisher," a spokesman for the gaming company said in an emailed statement.
Ea did not, however, buy the actual Angry Birds game, which is owned by the Finnish company, RovioMobile, that developed it. The acquisition of Chillingo gives EA access to the publishing revenue generated by the game's sales. RovioMobile's Twitter account posted a series of Tweets on Wednesday, clarifying that the company still owns Angry Birds and all of its associated intellectual property rights.
The Angry Birds app has been one of the most popular on the iPhone ever since its debut in November 2009. An Android version of the game was released last week, and passed the 2 million download mark in the first two days, according to RovioMobile. The game costs 99 cents in Apple's Apps stores but Android users can download it for free as it is sponsored by advertisers on the Android Marketplace.
The game has been a hit with hardcore gamers and casual players alike. Players use a slingshot to fling birds at green pigs who've stolen the birds' eggs (hence the reason the birds are angry). Players can select from different birds who have different abilities, strengths, and weights. The object of the game is to destroy all of the pigs within each of the more than 150 levels.
Variety magazine has reported that RovioMobile is planning on cashing in on the popularity of the game with a television show, a movie, and a toy line based on the game.
