Doors' Jim Morrison To Receive Posthumous
Pardon?
The legendary frontman of the iconic American rock band The Doors, Jim Morrison, is reportedly on the verge of receiving a posthumous pardon almost 40 years after being convicted of exposing himself onstage.
The incident occurred on March 1st, 1969 at a typically raucous Doors concert in Miami, Florida's Key Auditorium. Morrison was reportedly drunk and slurring obscenities during the performance, and at some point, allegedly unzipped his pants and simulated a sex act, a charge that Morrison denied.
Morrison was found not guilty of lascivious behavior and drunkenness charges, but was convicted on charges of indecent exposure and open profanity and sentenced to six months in jail. The verdict was still going through the appeals process when Morrison passed away at the age of 27 in 1971 in Paris, France.
Four decades later, the outgoing Governor of the state, Charlie Crist is reportedly considering a pardon for the iconic Rock star.
"It's something that I haven't given a lot of thought to, but it's something I'm willing to look into in the time I have left," Crist told The Hill. "Anything is possible. Stay tuned."
Fans of The Doors have been trying vainly for years to get Florida Governors to pardon the indiscretion without success. Most argue that the trial was a sham and there was never any conclusive proof to substantiate the claims that Morrison exposed himself. Crist, meanwhile, is scheduled to leave office in January after losing his bid for a Senate post, and the request must be submitted by December 9th. Under Florida state law a pardon requires the approval of the Governor and two other members of the Florida Board of Executive Clemency.
