Delta Upgrades Second-Quarter Guidance

Delta Airlines raised its forecast for second-quarter earnings on Monday, as an increase in revenue for the carrier has helped to offset higher fuel costs. In a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said it expects an operating margin of between 6.5 and 7 percent for the quarter, while passenger unit revenue is expected to climb by some ten percent for the Atlanta-based airline. The company's non-fuel costs, meanwhile, are up slightly due to higher maintenance costs and lower-than-planned capacity.

To help keep its overall costs down, Delta has taken a number of steps including offering 55,000 of its workers a voluntary exit plan, consolidation of facilities in a number of locations across the country, and early retirment of older, less fuel economic planes in its fleet. The company also reiterated previously announced plans to reduce its total system capacity by 4 percent following the Labor Day holiday, including a 1 to 3 percent scale-back of it US business.
