Dell Profits Surge
Dell Inc. released its fourth-quarter results late Tuesday, showing its net income nearly tripled in the three month period, fueled mainly by particularly strong corporate sales. The report drove shares of the computer maker up 5 percent in overnight trading.
Based in Round Rock, Texas, Dell reported a profit for the three months ended December of $927 million, or 48 cents per share, compared to a profit of $334 million, 17 cents per share, in 2009's final quarter. Company revenue was $15.69 billion, up from revenue of $14.9 billion the year prior. Adjusted income, excluding certain items, was 53 cents per share.
Analysts participating in a recent FactSet survey had projected profits of 36 cents per share on revenue of $15.75 billion. For 2011's first quarter, Dell said it expects “normal seasonal declines in its consumer and public businesses and, as such, a slight sequential decline in revenue.”
Dell enjoyed a nice boost from its servers and networking segment, which posted sales of $2.1 billion last quarter, a 16 percent increase over 4Q 2009. The company's storage division, however, experienced a 4 percent dip in sales in the quarter, while business-services revenue gained about 1 percent. The company's PC sales edged up 4 percent to $3.58 billion while its mobility computing sales also climbed 4 percent.
