Chrysler Recalls Nearly 250,000 Vehicles
Chrysler Group LLC has announced a recall of more than 248,000 minivans and crossover wagons because of a defect that could cause the key to slip while driving, causing a shutdown of the engine without warning.
Managed by Italian carmaker Fiat SpA, Chrysler says it has received reports of at least two rear-end collisions as a result of the issue, according to a notice posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website Thursday. Models affected by the recall include the Dodge Journey, Grand Caravan, and Chrysler Town & Country minivan. All the vehicles in question are 2010 models made between August 3rd, 2009 and June 17, 2010.
Chrysler estimates that about 3 percent of the 248,437 vehicles included in the recall will have the problem. Chrysler reportedly launched an investigation into the issue last September in response to a growing number of reports of stalling engines. The notice explains that bumpy roads or even drivers brushing against the key can cause it to turn to the accessory position, shutting down the engine. So far, the carmaker has received 32 customer complaints and 465 warranty claims related to the problem.
