China Expected to Continue As World's Top Energy
Consumer Through 2035
A report released Tuesday by the International Energy Agency predicts that China will continue to be the world's top energy consumer over the next 25 years, and oil will remain the most-used fuel despite sizable investments in alternative fuels.
The agency expects China's energy demand to increase by 75 percent by 2035, compared to an average increase of 36 percent for other nations. Americans continue to lead the world in per capita energy use, but China overtook the US in 2009 as the world's top overall energy consuming nation.
The report also said that China is "at the forefront of efforts to increase the share of new low-carbon energy technologies, including alternative vehicles." Globally, the use of renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, geothermal, and others, is expected to triple over the next 25 years, according to the report. Governments around the world are expected to increase investments in alternative fuel technologies. The use of nuclear power is also expected to rise.
The overall mix of energy sources used around the world, however, is expected to be little changed by 2035, the report shows. Oil is expected to still be the world's top energy source followed by coal. Demand for oil, as a result of population growth, is expected to rise from 84 million barrels per day in 2009 to 99 million barrels per day in 2035. The price of oil is also expected to rise, from $87 per barrel currently to about $113 per barrel by 2035.
