Cam Newton Cleared to Play By NCAA

The NCAA announced on Wednesday that they were suspending Auburn star quarterback Cam Newton for one day, clearing the way for Newton to play for the top-ranked Tigers as they head towards a possible berth in the BCS Championship Game.

Newton's father, Rev. Cecil Newton, and another unnamed person allegedly shopped the star player "as a part of a pay-for-play scenario in return for Newton's commitment to attend college and play football," the NCAA said.  But the NCAA found that there was no proof the Heisman Trophy candidate was involved and thus allowed him to retain his eligibility.

Auburn University, meanwhile, has limited Newton's father's access to its athletic program and Mississippi State, which also tried to recruit the player, has cut off ties with the third person involved.
