“Call of Duty: Black Ops” Shattering Sales Records

The latest title in Activision / Blizzard's “Call of Duty” video game series, “Black Ops,” continues to set records.  After setting a new opening day sales record with $360 million generated by 5.6 million copies sold, the title has continued its success and has surpassed the record for the first five days with sales of $650 million.

Activision says the numbers makes the game the most successful title of any kind in terms of number of units sold.  The company's “Modern Warfare 2,” the predecessor to “Black Ops,” set records a year ago.  Industry insiders say that with the numbers showing up so far, the game is well on its way to being one of the top entertainment properties of all time, and predict holiday shopping sales of the title to top $1 billion worldwide.

GameStop, the nation's largest retailer of video games, said that “Black Ops” was the most successful launch in the store's history, and experts predict the title will move close to 20 million units before the end of the holiday shopping season.
