Cache of 20,000 Prehistoric Fossils Unearthed in Chinese
Mountain
Scientists have discovered a giant cache of almost 20,000 fossil reptiles, shellfish, and other prehistoric creatures from a mountain in China. The discovery is revealing how life on the planet recovered after the most extensive mass extinction in the planet's history.
Researchers say the discovery could help improve our understanding of which species might be more or less susceptible to extinction, as well as pointing out how the world might recover from the environmental damage caused by man.
Life on Earth was almost wiped out completely about 250 million years ago by rampant volcanic eruptions and significant global warming. Only one out of every ten species survived the cataclysmic end-Permian event.
The discovery, scientists believe, will paint the clearest picture ever of how life recovered after the event as it represent the first fully functional ecosystem after the end-Permian ever found. The discovery was made when researchers excavated away half a mountain in Luoping in southwest China.
