Boise State Would Top BCS Rankings?

Just one week before the first BCS standings are released, ESPN's Brad Edwards released his own projections on where teams would be placed in the standings this week, and surprisingly, Boise State would be at the top.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are ranked Number 1 in the Associated Press, USA Today, and the Harris polls, with the Oregon Ducks coming in at Number 2. The USA Today and Harris polls figure into the BCS formula for deciding who plays in the National Championship game, as do a series of computer polls and mathematical formulas.

Despite being ranked Number 3 in all three major polls, the Boise State Broncos, according to Edwards' projections of BCS rankings, would be sitting atop the BCS rankings if they had been released one week earlier, followed by Oregon. The nation's top-ranked team, meanwhile, wold be all the way down at Number 5 in the BCS rankings, according to Edwards' unofficial calcualtions.

This doesn't mean, however, that Boise State is guaranteed a spot in the National Title Game should they win out. As the season progresses, Boise State's strength-of-schedule will diminish as they have no ranked teams left to play. The same factor for Ohio State, Oregon, Oklahoma, and other undefeated teams from conferences that receive automatic BCS bids, will rise as the season goes on.

"Though this is exactly what the BCS standings would look like if they came out today, this is not an indication of what they will look like several weeks from now if all these teams keep winning," Edwards said.

The first official BCS standings of the season will be released on Sunday on the "BCS Countdown Show" at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN.
