iTunes
Apple announced on Tuesday that they will finally be able to bring songs from the iconic rock band the Beatles to its iTunes digital music service.
Starting Tuesday, iTunes will offer remastered versions of all 13 Beatles albums in the Apple store. Also available are the two-volume “Past Masters” compilation as well as the band's “Red” and “Blue” collections. Fans can also purchase individual songs or an iTunes exclusive boxed-set which features live concert footage.
Sir Paul McCartney, one of two surviving members of the Beatles, expressed his pleasure at the announcement. "We're really excited to bring the Beatles' music to iTunes," McCartney said in an Apple news release. "It's fantastic to see the songs we originally released on vinyl receive as much love in the digital world as they did the first time around."
The Beatles were among the more notable names who had been holding out from the digital world, as those in charge of the band's catalog said that digital music quality was insufficient to do Beatles music justice. Tuesday's announcement concludes several years of rumors that the band's songs would finally become available in a digital format. iTunes users can download individual Beatles albums for $12.99 each, double albums for $19.99 each, and individual songs for $1.29 each.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs, an admitted die-hard fan of the group, welcomed the addition of the Beatles to the iTunes catalog. "We love the Beatles and are honored and thrilled to welcome them to iTunes," Jobs said Tuesday. "Thanks to the Beatles and EMI, we are now realizing a dream we've had since we launched iTunes ten years ago."
Among the bands who continue to hold out from allowing their music to be sold digitally are AC/DC, Kid Rock, and Bob Seger.
