Banks Increase Lending

A number of large banks in the US have recently increased their lending to businesses, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, a move economists view as a sign of economic recovery.  JPMorgan Chase, for example, is reporting a 7 percent increase in lending to companies with revenues between $10 million and $500 million this year.

A separate report from Moody's Analytics showed commercial and industrial lending rose 0.2 percent from the third quarter to the fourth, to $1.2 trillion.  Although the 0.2 percent number seems small, it was the first quarterly increase in the data since the financial crisis broke out late in 2008.  Moody's projects that such lending will grow another 3 percent in 2011.
