AT&T Sets 1Q Record for Smartphone Sales

Surprisingly, despite losing its exclusive rights to sell Apple's iPhones, business seems to be as good as ever over at AT&T.  The company reported Wednesday that it activated a staggering 3.6 million iPhones in the first quarter, about a million more than it activated in the same three months in 2010, despite Verizon getting the go-ahead to sell the smartphones.

Another interesting tidbit from AT&T's quarterly stats is that 40 percent of its smartphone sales in the period came from Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone 7 devices, meaning that iPhones account for about 60 percent of its overall smartphone sales.  All combined, AT&T sold 5.5 million smartphones in the quarter, a new record for AT&T in a first quarter.  The company's smartphone division now accounts for 46.2 percent of its postpaid userbase.
