Apple's App Store Hits 10 Billion Dowloads

Apple Inc. announced on Monday that its popular App Store has provided 10 billion downloads since launching in 2007, and insiders expect the popularity of the online marketplace to increase with the upcoming addition of an iPhone for Verizon's wireless network.

Apple has sold tens of millions of iPhones in the last three years and continues to increase usership of the App Store with the addition of its iPad tablet computer.  The store currently boasts more than 350,000 separate applications for use with the company's iPads, iPhones, and iPods.

Apple officials have said they will reward the user who downloaded the 10 billionth app from the store with a $10,000 gift card for the company's iTunes store.  The lucky winner was announced as a British user named Gail Davis, who hit the mark with a download of a free game app called “Paper Glider”.
