Apple Unveils Artist Renderings of
“Mothership”
Apple Inc on Tuesday released a series of artist renderings of its proposed second campus, which the company hopes to begin building by 2015. The project will officially be called Apple Campus 2, though many people involved in the design have started referring to the building as the Apple “Mothership” because of its circular main structure, pictured above. The project will cover 175 acres and the main structure will encompass 2.8 million square feet for offices and labs in addition to a 1,000 seat auditorium, fitness center and more.
The plan calls for much of the parking space to be located underground so that the land around the main building can be landscaped with lush vegetation indigenous to the area. The land where Apple's future headquarters will be built was purchased from Hewlett Packard last year. Jobs informed the Cupertino city council in June that he hopes to break ground in 2015. The city's official website indicates that the city still needs to hold public hearings, review development plans and assess the project's environmental impact, but Mayor Gilbert Wong has indicated the project will go through.
“There is no chance that we’re saying no,” Wong said back in June when Jobs first presented the plan to city officials.
