Apple In Talks With Labels to Offer Unlimited Access to
iTunes Users
Apple Inc. is reportedly in talks with several record labels to give its iTunes customers easier access to music they've bought on multiple devices. Apple is negotiating with Universal Music Group, Vivendi SA, and EMI Group Ltd., according to sources familiar with the talks. An agreement may be reached on the matter as early as this summer, the sources said.
An agreement would allow iTunes users greater flexibility in how they access the music they buy. The move is an attempt to maintain demand for digital downloads as the popularity of Internet radio services like Pandora Media is rising. Pandora and a host of similar sites, instead of selling downloads, stream songs over the web for a subscription fee.
Apple is seeking a deal with record companies that would let users have access to songs permanently, so they can re-download tracks they've purchased onto other devices, especially should they lose the original files. The deal would also set it up so that users can download to iPads, iPods, and iPhones from the same account. The deal would move iTunes a step closer to providing universal access to purchased content stored at one location on the Web.
An Apple spokesman declined to comment on the negotiations, as did spokespeople from all three labels.
