AOL Acquires Pictela

America Online, or AOL, announced Thursday morning it had acquired an ad tech company called Pictela.  In the announcement, AOL said Pictela has a "global technology platform for serving and distributing high-definition brand content across online advertising and social media."

If one were to examine Pictela's website, they would see that the company appears to create very rich and fancy looking online ads, which is reportedly exactly what AOL wants for its huge “Project Devil” banner ads.

Pictela will apparently operate as its own unit within the AOL advertising umbrella, located in New York, and the company will continue to do work for outside companies, according to Thursday's announcement.

The Pictela acquisition is AOL's first since splitting off from Time Warner.  Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
