Android Tablets Gaining on iPad
Sales of devices using Google's Android operating system soared in the fourth quarter, narrowing the lead of Apple's iOS, according to a report from Boston-based research company Strategy Analytics.
The company reported that Google Android devices accounted for 22 percent of the global tablet computer market in the period from October to December, compared to just 2.3 percent in the previous three months. The iPad's share, meanwhile, dropped from 95 percent in the third quarter to just 75 percent in the fourth.
Apple's iPad has reportedly sold nearly 15 million units since its April release, but has faced growing competition as more manufacturers enter the tablet computing market. Motorola, Samsung, Acer, and Mobility Holdings have all debuted new devices running on Android in recent months, and many more have tabs currently under development.
The study's authors predict that Apple's tab market share will continue to drop, expecting it to drop below 50 percent by 2013. Overall shipments of iPads grew 74 percent in the fourth quarter, to 7.3 million units. Shipments of Android devices, meanwhile, increased from about 100,000 in the third quarter to 2.1 million.
