Android Surpasses BlackBerry As #1 Mobile
OS
A recent market study from comScore shows that Google's Android mobile OS has surpassed Research In Motion's BlackBerry as the most-used smartphone OS in the United States. The climb to the top for Google has been rapid, considering Android didn't even exist as recently as 27 months ago.
Android's market share, according to comScore, was 31.2 percent of US smartphones in January, surpassing BlackBerry devices, which accounted for 30.4 percent of US smartphones during the month. The meteoric rise of Android's popularity began in October 2008, when HTC released the G1 smartphone, the first device running Google's Android OS. Then the platform started to gain momentum after Motorola released the Droid in November 2009.
Android began 2010 with a miniscule 7 percent of smartphone market share, but has grown an incredible t percent per month since, on average, to pass its rivals one by one. Android was in fourth place among mobile OS's as recently as May of last year, but passed Microsoft's Windows Mobile OS in June. The operating system then overtook Apple's iOS, which runs the popular iPhone, in November, oleaving only RIMM's BlackBerry ahead of it in market share.
January concluded the company's rise to the top, and there are no indications that Android will be surrendering the top spot anytime soon. Insiders estimate that 350,000 new Android devices are activated each day, and there are more than 170 smartphone models available running Android. Tech insiders say the bulk of Android's success can be attributed to its open business model, in which it licenses the OS for free, allowing device manufacturers to easily load the ready-to-go software onto its phones, rather than organizing a team of engineers to develop a new, proprietary platform.
