Android App Developers More In Demand than iOS
Engineers
According to a tally of help wanted ads on the online job board Dice.com, demand is now higher for software engineers who develop apps for Google's Android OS than for those working with Apple's iOS. As of March 1st, there were 987 active postings on Dice requesting Android experience, while only 970 posted positions required iOS experience. The number of posting requesting app experience in either operating system has now surged more than three times from a year ago, when there were just 273 Android positions and 312 iOS jobs on the site.
Demand in the tech sector is growing rapidly for Android programmers as more nad more companies look to get into the growing Android app market. Android passed Research In Motion's BlackBerry as the world's leading smartphone platform last year, but it still lags behind the iPhone platform with just over 120,000 available apps compared to the App Store's 350,000.
Companies are increasing the pace of hiring engineers with mobile software experience, as well, with about 57 percent of companies who hired mobile-related workers last year planning to increase such hires in 2011. Dice searches postings on its site once each month for the terms “Android” and “iPhone” to determine the number of each. The March tally was the first time Android came up more than iPhone. The site does not, however, look for other terms like iOS, iPad, or iPod Touch, which would likely produce more listings of companies seeking iOS developers.
