Amoebas Common in Drinking Water

A new study shows that amoebas, which are blob-shaped microorganisms that have been linked to a number of deadly diseases, can be found in drinking water systems around the world.  The study says that the occurrence of these microbes in water supplies and even in treated tap water are sufficient to represent a potential health risk.

Amoebas have been linked to a wide range of diseases, from blinding corneal infection to lethal brain inflammation.  Furthermore, amoebas can carry around harmful bacteria, allowing the bacteria to multiply inside the amoeba cells and even evade disinfection agents at water treatment facilities.  Despite extensive evidence that amoebas can harbor numerous human pathogens, water systems in the US are still not required to test for the parasites.

Researchers compiled data from 26 separate studies conducted in 18 countries, all of which had found amoebas in drinking supplies.  The study will be published Tuesday in the Environmental Science & Technology journal.
