Pleads Guilty of Threats Against Creators of “South
Park”
20 year-old Zachary Chesser pleaded guilty to charges of providing material support to terrorists, communicating threats, and soliciting crimes of violence. American-born Chesser allegedly posted threats online aimed at the creators of “South Park” for their depiction of the Prophet Mohammed in the animated sit-com.
Combined, the three charges carry a maximum possible fine of 30 years, and Chesser's defense team had agreed to a sentence of at least 20 years in a plea agreement, in exchange for prosecutors not charging the man's wife, Proscovia Kampire Nzabanita, with aiding and abetting. She is already charged with making false statements to authorities, a crime that carries a maximum five year prison sentence. The couple have an infant son.
The judge presiding over the case accepted the plea agreement on Wednesday and set a date of February 25, 2011 for sentencing.
Back in April, Chesser, who also goes by the name of Abu Talhah al Amrikee, posted a message on a radical Islamic website which included a threat to the creators of “South Park” after an image of the Prophet Mohammed wearing a bear suit appeared in an episode of the popular adult cartoon.
The message, posted on Revolutionmuslim.com, reads: "We have to warn Matt [Stone] and Trey [Parker] that what they are doing is stupid and they will probably wind up like Theo van Gogh for airing this show. This is not a threat, but a warning of the reality of what will likely happen to them."
Theo van Gogh was murdered by an Islamic extremist in 2004 after the dutch filmmaker produced a documentary about violence against women in Islamic societies. The message included a graphic depiction of van Gogh with a dagger in his chest and his throat cut.
The message continued: "You can contact them [the makers of "South Park"], or pay Comedy Central or their own company a visit at these addresses ... " and proceeded to list the network's New York address and the Los Angeles, California, address of Parker and Stone's production company.
