Amazon Tablet On the Way?

Of all the companies developing tablet computers to compete with Apple's dominance of the market, the most interesting might just be Amazon.  Yes, that Amazon; tech insiders have been speculating for months that Amazon will debut an Android-based tablet this year, and some have begun saying that Samsung is currently working on it.  Either way, an Amazon tab with all of the company's products and services would be uniquely positioned to steal sales away from Apple's iPad.

One unknown about an Amazon tab is which version of Android it would run.  Most new devices under development utilize Android 3.0, Google's version of the OS designed for use on tablets.  But with Google's recent moves limiting how OEMs can use Honeycomb, Amazon could take another route, using Android as a base upon which to build a totally customized experience that integrates its unique selection of products and services, much like Barnes & Noble has done with its Nook Color e-reader.

The Nook sells for about $100-200 less than comparable devices, because Barnes & Noble assumes, having integrated simple book buying services into the reader, that users will spend money buying books from them.  An Amazon tab could work in much the same way, integrating the e-retailer's music and other content-buying services into the device so that it would make money through content purchases, allowing it to charge considerably less than other devices.

Amazon has so far declined to comment on the development of a tablet computing device.  But given that it just launched its very own Android App store, there is surely something already in the works.  And given its unique library of pre-existing content through its music and video services, an Amazon tab could very well be something the folks over at Apple lose some sleep over.
