Amazon.com has thrown its hat in the ring in the race to become Americans' favorite place to store data and access it from anywhere. The online retailer launched a pair of new offerings Tuesday: Amazon Cloud Drive and Amazon Cloud Player. Cloud Drive lets users upload and store files such as music, video, and images on Amazon's servers and access them from any computer at anytime. Cloud Player, meanwhile, allows users to play media files on a computer or mobile device that runs on Google's Android OS.
The release of the new products beats out tech giants Google and Apple, each of which are reportedly working on similar cloud computing solutions to allow consumer to access digital content on multiple computers and devices. While Amazon does plan to charge for the Cloud Drive service, it is offering anyone with an active Amazon account 5 gigabytes of free storage. While 5 Gigs seems like a small amount of space, Amazon hopes it will encourage users to purchase additional space after they try it.
According to a spokesman for the Seattle-based ecommerce company, Amazon hopes to sell more digital music by offering the cloud computing service. The company realized that there are many consumers who are afraid to purchase digital music at work because they are afraid of associating them with work PCs, so they hope Cloud Drive will spur impulse music buying.
For users who find the free 5 gigs of storage insufficient, Amazon is offering a 20G storage plan for $20 (the 20G does include the free 5G). For a limited time, however, the company is offering 20G of storage free to customers who purchase an MP3 album from the Amazon store.
