Alcohol More Dangerous than Cocaine or Heroin, Study Shows
Alcohol More Dangerous that Cocaine or Heroin, Study
Shows
A recent study conducted by the British medical journal, The Lancet, reported that alcohol ranks as the most harmful of a list of 20 drugs which included crack and heroin. A panel of experts weighed the physical, social, and psychological problems associated with each of the drugs and determined that alcohol was responsible for the most negative effects.
Using a new scale in which experts evaluated possible harms to users and others, alcohol earned a score of 72 out of a possible 100. That score was three times as high as either cocaine or tobacco, according to the study. The study was scheduled to be published on The Lancet website on Monday, and in a future print edition of the journal.
The study named heroin, methamphetamine, and crack cocaine as the most dangerous drugs to users, while alcohol, heroin, and crack cocaine were deemed the most dangerous to others. The studies authors also discussed Britain's three-tiered drug classification system, where drugs are placed in categories that determine criminal penalties for possession and distribution, saying the the categories have "little relation to the evidence of harm."
The article was co-written by David Nutt, a current professor and England's former chief drug adviser, who stirred up controversy last year with his statement that ecstasy was less dangerous than riding a horse. Nutt later apologized to anybody offended by the article and to anyone who had lost loved ones to ecstasy. He said his intention was not to trivialize the risks associated with the drug, merely to compare them to dangers of everyday physical activities.
The study in The Lancet ranks ecstasy 9th out of the 20 drugs ranked, with a score one-ninth that of alcohol. The study was funded by the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies in London.
