Acer Chief Executive Steps Down
Acer Chief Executive Officer Gianfranco Lanci has reportedly resigned his post following a major disagreement with the company's board of directors over what the company's future priorities should be. Despite several months of discussions aimed at narrowing the differences, Lanci was unable to come to an agreement with the board and thus handed in his resignation.
Acer chairman JT Wang will reportedly assume Lanci's position on a temporary basis. “The personal computer remains the core of our business,” Wang said in an official statement outlining the board's differences with Lanci. In addition to focusing on continued growth in the PC market, Wang said that Acer would be “ stepping into the new mobile device market, where we will invest cautiously and aim to become one of the leading players.”
Lanci, who has served as Acer's top executive since 2008, was significantly in favor of expanding the company's business into the emerging mobile and tablet computer markets. Growth in these sectors has had a direct impact on sales of PCs. Acer's sales have resultingly dipped 10 percent in the first quarter of 2011, much worse than the 3 percent dip originally projected. Shares of the Taiwan-based company have dropped 18 percent in the four trading days since that announcement. The company began selling its first tablet computer last month and is expected to launch several more models in coming months.
