Abbey Road Crossing Declared Historic Site

Abbey Road Crossing Declared Historic
Site
The pedestrian crossing pictured on the Beatles' album, “Abbey Road,” was designated a site of national importance by British officials Wednesday. The site, just outside Abbey Road Studios in north London, is visited by Beatles fans from all over the world who pose for photos imitating the famous album cover which shows John, Paul, Ringo, and George strolling across the road.
"This London zebra crossing is no castle or cathedral but, thanks to the Beatles and a 10-minute photoshoot one August morning in 1969, it has just as strong a claim as any to be seen as part of our heritage," said the Minister for Tourism and Heritage, John Penrose, in a statement.
The famous crossing was declared a Grade II listed site in response to requests from the national preservation body English Heritage. The Grade II listing means that the crossing can only be altered with the approval of local authorities who would make any decision based on the historical significance of the site. Abbey Road Studios are also listed as a Grade II site, receiving the distinction in February.
