Recalled in the US
Daimler AG announced on Monday it was recalling more than 100,000 Mercedes-Benz automobiles in the United States and the United Kingdom to address concerns over a potential loss of power steering fluid.
In a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration posting on its website, the vehicles involved in the recall were identified as 2010 models of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and 2010-2011 models of the Mercedes-Benz Class-E. All of the affected models were reportedly manufactured between June of 2009 and February of 2010.
Of the 107,000 total vehicles being recalled, about 85,000 were sold in the United States and 22,000 were sold in the United Kingdom. Daimler described the recall as global but offered no details on affected cars in markets other than the US and UK. Daimler reported that the loss of fluid could make it difficult for drivers to control the cars in parking lots, where maximum steering power is essential.
The company described the issue as a gradual loss of power steering fluid, which would generally be followed by a whining noise coming from the power steering pump, but said that the fluid loss would not make the cars un-steerable.
The recall is scheduled to begin later this month, and US owners of affected vehicles are urged to contact Mercedes-Benz at (800)367-6372.
