6.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Mexico

The US Geological Survey reported that an earthquake of 6.9 magnitude struck Mexico's Gulf of California on Thursday.  The quake registered at a depth of 6.2 miles and was centered between the southern part of Baja California and the Mexican state of Sinaloa.  The quake's epicenter is believed to have been about 65 miles from the Sinaloa city of Los Mochis.

There have so far been no reports of any major damage, though area residents were quite shaken from the tremors.  A local journalist reported that frightened people streamed out of local buildings and area schools were closed for the remainder of the day.

Weaker quakes had been reported in the area for several days prior to the big tremor, according to local firefighters, who also reported that there had been no calls for emergencies in the immediate aftermath of the quake.
