4,500 Cruise Ship Passengers Stranded Off Mexican Coast

3,300 Cruise Ship Passengers Stranded Off Mexican
Coast
A Carnival Cruise Lines ship with almost 4,500 passengers was stranded off the coast of Mexico Tuesday after a fire in the ship's engine room caused the boat to lose power.
The fire reportedly occurred about 6 AM Monday morning in the aft engine room of the Carnival Splendor. The fire was extinguished and no injuries to crew or passengers were reported. Engineers were unable to restore power to the ship, however, as it continued to operate on auxiliary generators. As of Tuesday afternoon, Carnival officials reported, a number of key services such as air conditioning, hot food service, and telephones were still unavailable.
Engineers were successful Monday night in restoring toilet service to cabins and public restrooms, as well as cold running water. Crew are still actively trying to restore unavailable services. The cruise was scheduled for seven days along the Mexican Riviera, having been launched from Long Beach, California on Sunday; but a spokesman for Carnival reports the cruise has been terminated.
Tugboats are on their way to the ship, 200 miles south of San Diego, and will reportedly tow the vessel to Ensenada, Mexico in an attempt to get passengers back home as quickly as possible. Passengers will receive full refunds for the cost of the cruise, plus reimbursements for any additional travel costs incurred. In addition, passengers will be given a complimentary cruise of an equal amount on a future Carnival voyage.
