400 Nigerian Children Dead from Lead Poisoning

An estimated 400 children have died and 30,000 have been poisoned in the Nigerian state of Zamfara in the world's worst recorded outbreak of lead poisoning in history.  The contamination first came to light in May.

The situation began when the price of gold soared to $1,300 an ounce in the wake of the global economic crisis.  Young men living in mud huts in the region began mining ore in the area and processing it intheir homes in a search for gold.  But the men were unwittingly mining lead, and the dust from the processing contaminated their homes, poisoning children who live inside.

One such hut in the region was shown to have levels of 11,000 parts per million of lead, far above the safe level of 400 parts per million set by the US Environmental Protection Agency.  Volunteers are working non-stop to remove the contaminated soil and replace it with clean earth.  Four villages have been cleaned up already, with three more in the works.  Seven other villages need the clean-up, but the necessary funding has not been raised.
