1700 Evacuated as Dome
Fire Threatens West Boulder
Hundreds, perhaps thousands of Boulder, Colorado residents were forced to flee their homes on Friday as a wildfire fueled by high winds burned in the foothills west of town. A mandatory evacuation order went out that affected at least 1,700 people living on the west side of the city and in the foothills.
The Dome Fire, originally reported at 8 AM burning about a quarter mile west of Boulder Canyon, was estimated later in the day at 134 acres. 100 firefighters from 20 separate agencies were on scene attempting to contain the blaze, and more are expected to arrive as the day goes on. A plane was deployed to the area to drop massive amounts of flame retardant, as well.
Power outages were occurring as Xcel Energy crews worked to shut off power to the burn zone for safety reasons and to assist firefighters with their backburn operation. Crews had also reportedly shut down natural gas supply to the area of Knollwood by Friday afternoon, shutting the meters off at every residence.
Officials have announced that no homes were in immediate danger.
The backburn operations being conducted by firefighters will reportedly result in significant power outages. Outages will occur from 28th Street to Nederland from Baseline Road and Iris Avenue in the city and Allenspark to Coal Creek in the mountains. Outages are expected to last at least through late Friday afternoon.
A call center has been established for the Dome Fire. Affected residents can call 303-413-7730 for more information. Authorities have asked that concerned residents not call 911 for any concerns about the fire.
