Web Search Industry Lose on Key Privacy Ruling

Web Search Industry Lose on Key Privacy Ruling
The highest court in the European Union suggested this week that search engines like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft's Bing begin honoring requests to have their personal information removed from Internet search results.  The advisory judgment effectively backs individual privacy rights rights over freedom of information, and is expected to impact how the entire Internet search industry moves forward.  The ruling contends that an internet search on someone's name brings up a results page that is essentially a type of profile.  In compliance with European privacy regulations, private individuals should be permitted to ask to have personal information removed from that “profile”.

PC Sales Reach Five-Year Low as Tablet Popularity Continues to Rise

Gartner Research issued a report Thursday that showed a continued decline in sales of personal computers as more and more consumers turn to tablets and smartphones for all their computing needs.  According to the report, PC shipments declined 8.6 percent in the third quarter, marking the sixth consecutive quarter in which PC sales slipped.  Total shipments in the three months ended September 30th were also the lowest global total since 2008, Gartner said.  The decline last quarter was especially disconcerting to the PC industry as it included the back-to-school shopping season, typically a bountiful time of the year for the industry as students around the world upgrade computers for the new school year.

Apple Unveils Cheapest iPhone Yet

Apple Inc on Tuesday unveiled its cheapest iPhone yet, the iPhone 5C, considered a response to shrinking market share caused by competitors' selections of lower cost phones.  The company also debuted the newest version of its top-end smartphone, the iPhone 5S.  While companies other companies such as Samsung have been releasing numerous low-cost Android phones, Apple has focused on the higher end.  As smartphones have continued to creep into emerging economies, this strategy has cost market share for the Cupertino, California-based tech titan, a trend it's hoping to reverse with the affordable 5C.

New York Times Website Crashes In Suspected Cyber-Attack

The New York Times website went down Wednesday morning, leaving paid subscribers unable to get their morning news fix before heading for the office.  Attempts to visit the website resulted only in an error message saying the site could not be found.  Times personnel has been relatively tight-lipped about the outage, saying only that they were experiencing technical difficulties.  The Web was flooded with speculation about the incident, with many assuming the problem occurred because the site had been hacked, though a spokesman for the news magnate declined to confirm that suspicion.

Android Extends Dominance of Global Smartphone Market

Google continued making progress during the second quarter in its goal of dominating the global smartphone market.  More than 187 million Android-powered smartphones shipped in the April to June quarter, representing an increase of nearly 74 percent on a year-over-year basis.  The market share for Android phones, meanwhile, rose to nearly 80 percent as the tech behemoth put more distance between its Android OS and the No. 2 smartphone platform, Apple's iOS, whose second-quarter shipments totaled just over 31 million.  Shipments of Apple's iPhones rose about 20 percent year-over-year last quarter, giving the platform a 13.2 percent market share.

Texas Capital Earmarked for Google Fiber Internet Service

Google revealed on Tuesday the next community to be given access to its ultra-fast Fiber Internet service, prompting shudders of anticipation in the heart of Texas.  Following Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri, Austin will be the third US city to enjoy Google's high-speed network, which the tech giant says delivers speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second, or about 100 times faster than the average Internet speed across the country.  With the network in place, Google will also offer Fiber TV, an all-HD television service that allows users to record as many as eight shows at a time and store 500 hours of programming online.  Users can then access the video from the cloud on any device including computers, tablets and smartphones.

Microsoft Windows 8 Sales Hit 40 Million

Microsoft Inc announced on Tuesday that sales of its Windows 8 operating system hit 40 million this week, matching the initial success of its predecessor, Windows 7.  The revamped Windows product was launched October 26th, just prior to the beginning of the all-important holiday shopping period, and the Redmond, Washington based tech giant said it sold its 40 millionth license for the software earlier this week.  Perhaps even better news for Microsoft, upgrades to Windows 8 from earlier versions are being sold faster than with any previous version.  Of course, that's not all that surprising, given Microsoft's promotional offer giving Windows XP, Vista or 7 users a chance to upgrade for just $40.  That promotion runs through January 31st, and applies to online upgrades only.

Top Windows Executive Leaves Microsoft

Tech giant Microsoft will be searching for a new heir apparent for CEO Steve Ballmer after Steven Sinofsky, head of the company's Windows unit, stepped down on Tuesday after 23 years with the company.  Sinofsky had long been considered the obvious choice to replace Ballmer to run the Redmond, Washington-based firm.  Neither Sinofsky nor a Microsoft spokesman offered an explanation for the abrupt departure, but an anonymous source described the decision as “mutual,” adding that Sinofsky won't likely be taking a position with another company any time soon.
