Star Wars: The Force Awakens Becomes Third Film to Reach $2 Billion
Walt Disney announced Friday that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the third film ever to surpass the $2 billion mark in global ticket sales, matching the feat previously achieved by only Avatar and Titanic. The seventh Star Wars film achieved the milestone in just 53 days, far faster than the other two. The film also enjoyed the biggest opening in cinematic history, reaching the $1 billion watermark in just 12 days. The Force Awakens has already surpassed the sales marks set by any of the previous Star Wars films, and it's only the beginning of Disney's run at the helm of film's greatest franchise. The studio has already announced it will release the next film, Star Wars: Episode VIII in December, 2017; following it up with Epidode IX in December, 2019.
Tracey Morgan Reaches Settlement with Wal-Mart Over Crash that Nearly Killed Him
Comedian Tracey Morgan has reached a settlement with the world's largest retailer after a Wal-Mart truck rear-ended a limousine Morgan was traveling in on June 7th, 2014. "Wal-Mart did right by me and my family, and for my associates and their families. I am grateful that the case was resolved amicably," Morgan said, in a statement released by his attorneys. Terms of the settlement were not made public. The accident occurred when Morgan and his entourage were returning from a performance in Delaware, and their limo was struck by the Wal-Mart truck after braking to avoid rear-ending another vehicle that was braking. Comedian James McNair (aka Jimmy Mack) was killed in the crash, and a total of four people were seriously injured, including Morgan. The driver of the truck, Kevin Roper, had reportedly been awake for 24 hours prior to the crash and was speeding. He has already pleaded guilty to one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto.
Jamie Foxx Responds to Criticism of National Anthem Performance
Actor Jamie Foxx responded Tuesday to criticism about his performance of the national anthem at last weekend's Floy Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Speaking to "Entertainment Tonight", the actor who portrayed Ray Charles explained that his in-ear monitor had fallen off just before he started singing. The song sounded great at the arena, Foxx noted, and he even received compliments from celebrities including Denzel Washington. After reading harsh criticism, Foxx said, he went back and listened to the performance, acknowledging that it was a “bit off”. He did not, however, commit a "sin against America," as one blog entry asserted. Check out Foxx's performance below.
