Hungry Bear Review - Great French Toast & More in Woodland Park, CO

By Dave Simmons
I have been to the Hungry Bear in Woodland Park, CO many times, but had never tried their french toast.  Whenever I go somewhere for breakfast I always think it sounds so good but I don't order it often, because when I do, I am usually disappointed.  On this particular day the Hungry Bear had pumpkin french toast and I thought, 'why not?'.  Let me end the suspense and say I was not disappointed.  In fact, as I am writing this, I can't even think of a better french toast I have ever had.  This came with crushed nuts pressed onto the bread and the pumpkin flavor was not overpowering - it was perfect.  The plate also came with eggs (I asked for scrambled) and hash browns.  I know it is ridiculous to review scrambled eggs but I give the Hungry Bear's two thumbs up, hashbrowns too.

Although everything I have eaten at the Hungry Bear has been excellent, the only reason I decided they were in dire need of a review is due to their french toast.  Every day after eating there I kept thinking about going back for breakfast, many times I even started to drive up the pass (I live in Colorado Springs) on Hwy 24 but decided it was too far for breakfast (it's only twenty minutes from Colorado Springs).  If you are visiting Colorado Springs or live here, I really recommend going.  It is a beautiful drive, especially this time of year and I have had breakfast at all the hotspots in the Springs and, trust me, this one belongs at the top.

Well I finally convinced myself to go again and I couldn't have been more pleased with my decision.  Today's special was banana and cinnamon flavored french toast.  They had other specials but I had one thing on my mind.  It was magnificent!    Thick slices of bread with just hint of banana and cinammon.  I found myself to be more analytical today and I thought - the french toast actually tastes like french toast but it also has a consistency of pancakes, so I am assuming, in addition to dipping it in an egg wash, they also dip it in pancake batter.  This time I ordered two sausage links, cooked just the way I like them (well done) and scrambled eggs.

After many trips to the Hungry Bear my other back pocket highlight I can share with you is - try the Rockies Breakfast Burrito, which is a large flour tortilla stuffed with diced & grilled ham, onions & green peppers, filled with scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese & seasoned hash browns with salsa or green chili or sausage gravy - I always go for the green chili.  For the more traditional, order an omelet - they're as good as any other around.
