I am always looking for the best burger EVER, but I had no idea I would find it in San Diego, CA. Several years ago I had THE best burger, tucked away in some small town in Texas. Since then, that place has changed ownership and I have heard the burger wasn't as good, so I will hold off on my review until I try one under the new ownership. Back to what I do know:
Hodad's serves the best burger!! My sister told me about the place and in the back of my mind I didn't really trust her when she told me that they served the best burger in town. For one, I'm in California - what do they know about the art of the burger - this is a place that puts In & Out Burger on a pedestal. I have had several In & Out burgers and I just don't get it. It's a decent burger but there's nothing great about it, in my opinion.
Back to Hodad's. The burger joint was featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and coupled with the fact that it serves an outstanding burger, the place is always packed. My sister warned me that there might be a line to get in, that it sometimes goes around the block, but on this night there were only about 20 or so people in line when we arrived. After about ten or fifteen minutes, one of the waitresses asked if anyone wanted to sit at the bar and we quickly accepted her open invitation. The place was packed inside but it is rather small (only about fifteen tables inside).
My sis' told me, 'the bacon cheeseburger is the only way to go' and who am I to argue. She ordered the regular bacon cheeseburger, which is huge, and I ordered the double bacon cheeseburger, which is ridiculously HUGE. I did, however, take her suggestion on the onion rings, 'one order is enough for two' and she was right. The burger was absolutely amazing and piled high, REALLY HIGH. I had to take out the tomatoes and smash it down just to take a bite out of it. The bacon was cooked to perfection, very crispy. You really should watch the video above to see how they cook it because there is no way I could do it justice. I will say that the bacon functions as an actual patty, so, along with two big hamburger patties...well, I'm sure you get the idea. The hamburger meat was juicy, fresh - never frozen, flavored well and cooked just the way I like it. I must have thought I was on an episode of Man vs Food because I was not leaving that place until I finished the burger. I did and I felt it the rest of the night, but I would do it again in a heartbeat - although next time I think I will order the regular bacon cheeseburger. The onion rings were really delicious - came with ranch dressing. The shake was good, loaded with ice cream. The chocolate tasted a little odd to me, or maybe just a bit too much, so next time I am going the vanilla route. In closing, after eating that burger, who freakin' cares about anything else. My vote is in: Hodad's doesn't just have the best burger in San Diego, CA, it has the best burger on the planet!....to be continued......
