San Francisco natives got a minor scare Thursday when Union Square was evacuated due to a suspicious package spotted in the area and reported to authorities. The threat proved innocuous, however, as authorities issued an “all-clear” and re-opened the popular tourist spot less than 2 hours after the suspicious package was first reported. According to a spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department, the initial call about the package came in at 11:50 AM. Authorities surrounded the 2.6 acre plaza, evacuating shoppers and tourists and directing store employees to lock their doors and take cover. A little over 90 minutes later, however, authorities lifted the closure and reported that their was “no merit to the suspicious device.”
